Clear aligners such as Invisalign are in many ways different from traditional braces, not just in the way they look but also in the way they function.
With orthodontic treatments, there may be a time when you may feel some discomfort or may have to make certain adjustments to your lifestyle to ensure you get the beautiful, white smile, you deserve at the end of the treatment.
To help you or your child make the transition smoother, we asked our experts at iSmiles Kids Dentistry and Orthodontics in Corona, California, about what to expect when getting started with Invisalign.
Slight discomfort during the treatment
Much like traditional braces, Invisalign uses pressure to move teeth. In the first weeks, you may feel discomfort as your teeth are under pressure.
Each time you change your tray with Invisalign, you’ll get several trays as the treatment progresses. You may feel discomfort and slight pain. However, the discomfort and pain associated with Invisalign are less severe when compared to that of traditional braces.
During the first couple of weeks, you may also talk with a lisp as your tongue gets accommodated with speaking while wearing Invisalign.
Dietary changes aren’t a requirement
Because the trays are removable, you won’t need to skip your favorite foods out of fear of damaging the trays. However, as your teeth move and become a bit loose in the process, you may find it harder to bite from an apple or chew on hard foods.
With Invisalign, you can drink any fluids as well, but it’s best to stick to water while you have them on and remove them when drinking juices or coffee, as colored fluids can stain the trays.
Hygiene habits don’t change much
You’re expected to keep your teeth clean just as you would before wearing Invisalign. Because the trays are removable, you don’t need to worry about using special tools to clean your teeth.
In addition, because you don’t have to brush around brackets and wires, there’s a smaller chance of dental plaque building up and cavities developing during the treatment.
The treatment timeline is shorter
When compared with traditional braces, Invisalign treatments, on average, last about a year. With traditional braces, you can expect to wear them between 18 and 24 months.
The treatment length depends on the complexity of the treated issue.
